Set Up Alert Features

For a full walk through of the App interface, you can read our guide(s) for Apple (iOS) App and Android App linked here.

When Setting Up Alert Features and Driver Behavior, we recommend setting up via the Online Interface by logging in HERE via a computer. In the User Guide, you can follow the steps for the specific Alerts you will need.

Install and Calibrate

Now you are ready to install and calibrate! For this step, you will need a safe, open space for driving in order to properly calibrate- specifically an area for driving straight 50 meters uninterrupted and reaching 20 mph. We recommend finding a long, open street or a large parking lot free of other drivers.

Take your phone with the app already downloaded, the device, the vehicle that’s going to be tracked and your teenage driver to the straightaway or parking lot for install and calibration.

Park the car in a way that will allow you to drive straight for 50 meters, reaching 20 mph.

With the engine off and parking/emergency brakes set, hop out of the front seat and find the plug for the device under the wheel well. Depending on your vehicle, this plug will either be facing the driver or facing the floor.

Fully plug the device in and the LEDs on the device should begin to illuminate. While the Red and Blue LEDs will flash, the Green should go solid fairly quickly.

Turn the engine on, stay parked and leave the device plugged in for 5 minutes.

After that 5 minutes, hop in the driver’s seat, buckle up.

Drive forward, straight, for 50 meters reaching 20 mph. Once 50 meters is hit, the device will emit a prolonged “beep”.

Once you hear the “beep” come to a safe and complete stop.

Congratulations! Your device is now calibrated and ready to be tested out!

***Didn’t hear a beep or had to turn/ stop early during the initial calibration drive? That’s okay! Unplug the device for 1 minute and then plug it in again for 2-3 minutes. Ensure that the Green LED goes solid.

Then, recalibrate by logging into the App, click Device List, click on the Device bubble, click Calibrate Device tab, click the Green Calibrate button and wait 5 seconds before driving forward to calibrate.

Test Drive

Now it’s time to see what this device can do! With the initial test drive, we recommend the parent or guardian start off driving. This way, you can put your driving skills to the test for your teenager to see!

If in a large parking lot with no other drivers around, we recommend purposefully testing out the Harsh Braking, Harsh Turning, and Rapid Acceleration. This is a way to confirm that it is registering these purposeful events.

As these events occur, the device will beep to alert the driver and an SMS/ Email notification will be sent to those you set up to receive them.

Now, take the car out for a normal drive on some errands and see how many beeps you get!

PocketFinder is helmed by parents like you. We were surprised by the beeps we got when testing our own units. But as we reviewed and thought about that turn or braking, we realized we did take it “harsher” than we should have.

As parents, we are not perfect drivers either! Doing the test drive with your teenager and talking through the beeps you get will show them this isn’t meant as punishment, but a tool to help them be the safest driver on the road.

***If after a few days of testing, you are finding the device is too sensitive or not sensitive enough, we recommend re-calibrating. Unplug the unit for at least a few minutes and then follow the installation and re-calibration steps.

If you still find sensitivity is off, reach out to Support. We will review and see if we need to adjust settings behind the scenes for your device specifically.
